Let’s say you’re working on a report and you need to use some text – the problem is that the text is not in a Word or Text file, it is on real paper. Using your scanner, webcam, document camera, or high resolution camera, you can capture the text you need as an image then load the image into TopOCR and let it process it. The application will recognize and present the text to you so you can do whatever you want to do with it.

TopOCR can be installed on a machine powered by anything from Windows XP onward; a simple setup wizard will guide you through the installation process and you will have no problems getting the application up and running. Please note that your Windows-powered machine should have 2GB of RAM or more to run TopOCR. And your camera should have 2-to-5 megapixel or more.

The TopOCR interface is divided into two windows. To the left you have the Image Windows that displays the image file you loaded. To the right you have the Text Window; after TopOCR processes an image, it presents the text from said image in this window. In the upper left hand corner of both windows there’s a traditional File menu that allows you to access all the functionality TopOCR has to offer.

Speaking about functionality, here’s what you can expect to get from this application: works with high resolution webcams, document cameras, smartphones, and scanners; uses OCR technology to recognize the text in images; image edition functions; text editing functions; spell checker; text-to-speech; easily access Google Translate.

Please note that TopOCR is only free to try; some features are disabled in the trial version.

Easily grab text from images with TopOCR’s powerful optical character recognition technology.

Pros

The system requirements for running TopOCR are not that high; getting the application up and running takes little time and effort. It won’t take long to get accustomed with the interface either. TopOCR blends together image editing and word processing functionality.

Cons

Limited functionality in the trial version.
